October 18, 1977, curated by Birgit Rathsmann @Klemens Gasser & Tanja Grunert, Inc. (NYC)
BIrgit Rathsmann asked artists from around to world to react to the historical Baader-Meinhof group in the context of contemporary global politics. I contributed an anonymous backpack stuffed to the breaking point with onions and an unmoored bedsheet rope. The latter was titled “a certain sympathy” after the results of a German poll at the time showed that 25% of Germans expressed “a certain sympathy” with the terror group, and one in five said they would consider offering material support if a member showed up on their doorstep. The rope also resonates with the makeshift rope used in Ulrike Meinhof’s Mother’s Day suicide.
